Applications of Hydropower Plants
Cranes are essential lifting equipment in hydropower stations, serving throughout the entire lifecycle from construction and equipment installation to operation, maintenance, and overhaul. The two primary types used are overhead bridge cranes and gantry cranes.
Overhead bridge cranes are typically installed in the main powerhouse, running on rails along the side beams. They are used for the lifting, transportation, and installation of major equipment such as turbines, generators, inlet valves, and main transformers. In large hydropower plants, these cranes must deliver exceptional capacity and precision—exemplified by the 1,300-ton bridge crane at the Wudongde Hydropower Station and the tandem lifting of 1 million kW generator rotors using two 1,300-ton cranes at the Baihetan Hydropower Station, with single-hook capacities leading both domestic and international peers. Overhead cranes are also the core tools for maintenance and overhaul during plant operation, and recent developments include remote intelligent control systems capable of millimeter-level precision lifting.
Gantry cranes are primarily installed in outdoor areas such as dam crests, intakes, and tailrace sections, used for opening, closing, and transporting various gates, trash racks, and metal structures. The 10,000 kN (approx. 1,000-ton) bidirectional dam crest gantry crane at the Baihetan Hydropower Station is currently the world's largest-capacity dam crest gantry crane; another 1,600-ton gantry crane is used for emergency deep-outlet gate operations.
Working in coordination, these two types of cranes jointly ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of hydropower stations.
